What’s Hot in local entrepreneurship for 2017? SXSW!
For the first time in university history, Texas A&M is hosting a “House” at SXSW, the world’s premier interactive technology, film and music festival. Austin’s South by Southwest Conference & Festivals will be March 10-19. Texas A&M President Michael Young has commandeered the entire Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt as home base for the week. Aggie-owned, the Hotel Van Zandt is a boutique facility in the city’s trendiest district and within walking distance of Capital Factory as well as 6th Street.
Texas A&M Visualization faculty, staff, and students will present The Collision of Art & Technology, featuring design lighting, sound, visuals, interactive experiences and technologies that will create six to eight ‘zones of engagement’ within the Texas A&M House. The presentation will provide encounters with issues of global importance and provide the audience with access to interact with former Star Wars character wrangler Tim McLaughlin, a leader in the visual effects and animation industries.
The Texas A&M Engineering Innovation Center, a facility in the College of Engineering, will also be showcased in Texas A&M’s SXSW House. Teams of graduate and undergraduate Texas A&M students will assemble for a timed build of devices aimed at implementing the Intelligent Future. Areas of focus will include healthcare, augmented reality and smart interconnected devices. These devices will be tested on site and reviewed by a panel comprised of industry leaders who will determine the team to receive a funding package to advance their concept to commercialization and a mentorship package provided by the EIC.
The Rise of Academic Incubators, located in Startup Village, will bring together a panel of discussion by national policy-makers, industry leaders, commercial funding partners and higher education administrators from diverse university incubators to discuss how universities are responding with entrepreneurial pathways, such as curriculum enhancements, mentorship programs, and physical incubator space, to facilitate connections to students, potential investors and industry leaders. Incorporating these components keeps universities competitive and attractive and therefore better able to retain talented students and faculty.
